Incorporating sustainable building Materials: A client's story

Our clients embarked on the exciting journey of building their dream home on a picturesque piece of land in The Gap. As they began planning, they faced the challenge of navigating bushfire regulations, which required the removal of some large, existing trees from the site. Despite this necessity, they were committed nature lovers who cherished the beauty of their surroundings.

Rather than see these trees go to waste, they made a thoughtful decision to salvage some of the timber. The idea was to incorporate these pieces into their new home’s design, not just as materials but as a part of their home’s story and character. The trees were carefully milled and stored onsite, awaiting their transformation into furniture pieces that would bring a piece of the land’s history into their daily lives.

One particularly striking tree caught their attention and possessed a natural allure that captivated them even though the species was unknown. They envisioned creating something special with it, something that would stand out in their home and serve as a testament to their commitment to sustainability and their love for natural aesthetics.

After much consideration and collaboration with our design team, we settled on crafting a bespoke Linear pendant for their kitchen island. This piece would not only illuminate their cooking space but would also become a central gathering point for their family and friends. Its design incorporated the natural curves and textures of the wood, complementing their chosen Blackbutt timber flooring and island benchtop, which were finished in a clear coat to highlight their natural beauty.

During the crafting process, the inherent imperfections of the timber—such as natural fissures—became an integral part of the design. These fissures were artfully filled with black resin, enhancing the wood’s character and telling a story of resilience and natural beauty.

As the project neared completion, anticipation grew. Finally, just before the handover of their new home, the pendant was installed in its rightful place above the kitchen island. The clients were overjoyed with the final result, not only because of its aesthetic appeal but also because of the meaningful connection it held to their home and the land it was built upon.

This unique piece of furniture not only serves as a functional element in their home but also stands as a testament to their values, their love for nature, and their commitment to creating a space that reflects who they are.
